GÜNTER Gráfica & Packaging

We know a thing or two about printing.  We know, for example, that it is easier to have 50,000 flyers printed than 5,000, why that gold inlay never looks quite right, and why the high-end printshop you laboriously picked out never really gave you their full attention.  The fact remains that if your order invitations for a modest party of 3,000 people, you are nowhere near your print shop?s most important client, which means that the service they provide you – from (any) consultation to the graphics and printing itself — will be second rate.  Finally, you?re charged top prices for the privilege of being mostly ignored, and who knows if you?re invitations will be distributed correctly or even arrive on time.

This is a challenge we encounter constantly as a company.  Boutique wineries, exclusive events, restricted access — all these things mean the same thing when it comes to printing: top quality in limited quantities.  We have begun to feel that there is a missing link in the printing & packaging business: a lack of printing shops that are willing to provide expert consultation and fine printing for smaller clients.  For this reason FORMA Cultural Branding took the step and launched GUNTER, a graphic printing, production and packaging company based in Buenos Aires.

Working with some of the largest paper, packaging, and rare materials distributors in Argentina, Gunter provides consultation, printing, packaging and distribution services to clients in Argentina and Brazil.  With the design and branding expertise of the FORMA team as a guide, Guther manages the details that make printing and packaging so incredibly laborious — paper weights, embossing, stamping and finishing, to name a few.  In everything, Gunter relies on FORMA?s tried-and-tested network of suppliers (many of whom we have worked with for more than twelve years), for the most trustworthy service and the lowest estimates. Finally, and most importantly, by eliminating those ?satellite? companies that feed off of most print shops (manufactures, distributors, etc.) and handling these services in-house, we can charge significantly less than most printing and packaging shops.

Thinking Locally

As a part of this decade?s organic movement, more consumers are thinking locally about products they are purchasing. However, now people are using the latest technologies and social media to disseminate those ideals. A recent article from Britain?s Brand Republic suggests that the Digital Revolution is being utilized to inform clients of where they can find these locally grown products. With online applications that allow you to trace back exactly where an egg originated, this sort of ?techno-innovation? acts to legitimate locally produced claims, as well as expose the bogus ones.

Buenos Aires has amazing potential to also utilize digital media to promote local brands, from food markets to design locales. Locally minded stores have begun to pop up in Buenos Aires with gaining speed; now the digital media sector just needs to catch up. Guia Oleo boasts of eighty-two ?Natural? restaurants to choose from, while markets modeled after Whole Foods, such as Natural Deli and The Pick Market, have made quite the impression on local shoppers. The potential exists for these brands to also take advantage of digital media. In the past couple of years the city has joined the global social media craze that has revolutionized marketing and advertising. However, the question is now: How can Buenos Aires utilize digital media such as mobile applications and social media to further promote local products and businesses? Bicycles Back in the Spotlight

With the green revolution, it has actually become trendy to be environmentally conscious. In just about every Whole Foods Market in the U.S. you see fashion-conscious strolling around with their reusable, recycled bags and choosing fair trade instead of fair fur products. In Buenos Aires we see the same trend: try Palermo Hollywood?s Bonpland Market on Saturday afternoon to find a mercado full of organic breads, pasta, produce and clothes.

All of this seems relatively understandable. There?s a new initiative to confront global warming, and fashion is leading the way towards a more environmentally conscious world. However, one activist trend?s popularity might come as a surprise: the return of the bicycle. Green programs all over are promoting the use of the bicycle as an environmentally friendly way to get around, rather than the gas-guzzling cars we?ve become so accustomed to. Additionally, there?s the added benefit of exercise. But is this really something that can be turned into a trend?

Virtual design websites point to yes. One of our favorite websites, designboom, recently announced a competition in collaboration with Seoul Design Foundation to promote an international contest called the ?Seoul Cycle Design Competition 2010?. The South Korean city wants to redesign their urban environment to be more inline with the recent global green explosion. The city wishes to improve its brand and image, promoting a more modern and environmentally friendly approach to urbanism. Interestingly, the city is combining design and an international environmental awareness to achieve that end. Another favorite design website, Wallpaper*, also discusses the bike phenomena. The website recently published a short article about the craft of building hand-made bicycles, and offers coverage of ?Bespoke: The Handbuilt Bicycle? an exhibit currently at the Manhattan?s Museum of Arts and Design. The online magazine also boasts that they have three new, specially commissioned handbuilt bikes they will be presenting in their August issue. Paul Smith, legendary designer, has been on to the bicycle trend for quite some time now. He?s currently working in collaboration with a Danish charity project La Flamme Rouge to design bikes to auction off and raise money for the cause. Not to mention these aren?t your ordinary street bicycles. Smith describes in detail on a recent blog entry the components: made in Denmark by Principia, SRAM for breaks and gears, and the handlebars are FSA from Italy, to name a few. Buenos Aires also has the potential to make bikes trendy and promote a greener attitude through creative competitions that reinforce the city?s essence. Creative contests draw international attention to an urban image, reinforcing those associations. Even cities have a brand to create that is recognized on a global level. Brand essence is that image, but the key is to establish one with longevity and that has room to develop with the changing times.
